Sunshine Nursery School - History and Philosophy, continued
Why a Co-operative School?
A child's life at school is enriched if parents take an active part in it.  Most important,
this participation results in a mutual understanding between parents, children and
teachers.  Each family is required to have a person assist in the nursery school between
6 and 8 times a year.  In this way, they not only free the teachers so that they may
concentrate on working with the children, but most important, they are able to observe
their own child's interaction with children and adults in a new environment and in group
situations.  Parents put these observations and insights to use in individual conferences
with the teacher during the course of the school year.  Special talents or interests of
the parents are used to enrich our program.  Learning situations involve discovery,
investigation, imaginations and individual expression of interests and feelings.  We
encourage the child to learn to verbalize emotions and to replace immature or socially
negative reactions with more mature ways of dealing with problems.  (If we are able to
help the child grow emotionally, it will lead to the achievement of positive interactions
and to the enjoyment of learning.)

In addition, families are responsible to help with other aspects of the school.  These
opportunities give families a chance to share their time and talents, and also help
children learn the importance and satisfaction of giving back to a community.
 Here are
some ways we help throughout the year...

Non-Discrimination Statement
Sunshine Nursery School will admit any child regardless of race, religion, cultural
heritage, disability, parent's marital status, political beliefs, or sexual orientation.

Goals
The process of growing up includes maturing emotions as well as skill development.
Sunshine Nursery School enriches this process for young children through interaction
with many individuals, adults and other children.  In our relaxed but structured
atmosphere, children gain some understanding of the personalities, ideas and problems
of others.  A child entering kindergarten at the age of 5 has a greater advantage if he or
she has a mature and cooperative attitude toward others.  We aim to enable each child
to develop to the fullest potential of individual personality rather than to fit into a
preconceived mold.  Our emphasis is on development and encouragement of many facets
of a youngster's personality.

What Will Your Child Learn at Sunshine?
1. To develop a self-concept as an individual apart from the child's place in the family
group.
2. To enjoy school, have many successes and feel good about himself.
3. To be encouraged and guided to communicate more effectively.
4. To enlarge knowledge of the world in which we live,
and develop those cognitive skills for when each child is ready.
5. To participate in group activities.
6. To have the proper materials and frequent opportunities for developing muscular
control and for releasing emotions in dramatic play and creative activities.
7. To enjoy experiences in art, music and literature

Accreditation  IMPORTANT UPDATE TO THIS INFORMATION HERE...
Sunshine Nursery School has been accredited since 1992 (an assurance of quality) by the
National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Accreditation means that Sunshine engaged in an extensive self-study based on the
Academy's
criteria for high quality early childhood programs.  The accuracy of the
program's self-study was verified by a site visit by a team of trained volunteer
validators.  The validated self-study was received by a three member national
commission composed of recognized experts in early childhood and childhood education.
The program was judged to be in substantial compliance with the Academy's criteria and
was granted accreditation for a three-year period.
