Besides our terrific programs, Sunshine Nursery School also has a long tradition of enriching the classroom curriculum with outstanding extracurricular offerings. The following are descriptions of the various enrichment programs we offer at Sunshine Nursery School.
Drama (Bob Antonelli of Kidstock/Winchester): Bob involves all of the children in acting out different stories, with each visit based on a different theme. The programs are themed on collaboration through social empathy, tolerance, diversity, and creative problem solving. “Through self-expression, self-empowerment, education, and creativity, theater plays an important role in child development.” (from Kidstock website)
Nature (Erika Whitworth of Habitat/Belmont): Miss Erika comes once/month to share her love of the natural world with Sunshine children. The children look forward to guessing the content of the “mystery cup”, looking at photos and artifacts, playing games, and finally, meeting the living creatures she often brings along.
Physical Education (Coach John): When Coach John enters the building, the buzz quickly spreads throughout the school! The children love his high energy, his sense of humor and his great repertoire of exciting games and activities. He gives them a great introduction to sporting skills and what it means to be a good sport.
Tufts Traveling Treasure Trunk: Students from the Tufts University Drama Department have been “delighting audiences across the Greater Boston Area with their original plays and engaging skits and songs” since 1987! The children of Sunshine love the interactive drama and music experience followed by an exciting Q&A session where the college students patiently entertain a variety of inquiries from the children.
Yoga (Deb Ronga of Lotus Lil): Deb Ronga comes to Sunshine for a “playful introduction to yoga for young children which weaves together children’s literature, storytelling, creative movement, song and/or cooperative games. Through this multi-disciplinary approach the children will learn basic, child-friendly yoga poses, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques which help to promote strength, flexibility, balance, focus, connection, respect and peace.”
